Contemporary Dance Training

contemporary dance training

Contemporary dance is a type of theatrical dance which has a historical lineage from classical ballet which acted as a spring board from which it has evolved over the last century. Despite its large inclusive movement scope that permits the incorporation of different movement styles to be integrated with it, there are some particularly specific contemporary techniques of great importance of which the following are of major influence in the field.

Graham Based Contemporary

Focuses on dance and movement that is generated from the core of the body to its peripheries creating a centered physicality; moving from the centre using the notions of “contraction, release and spirals” of the torso, moving from the inside out. Two separate groups are taught: beginners and intermediate:

From the very first level at the beginning: starting with the preliminary somatic training – with the idea of using what is physically most accessible, breath awareness and its connection to movement, using the floor to ease the way, sensing and understanding the source, depth and accuracy of the contraction, spirals and the use of opposition laying the foundation of this very particular technique. Progressively these understandings would be incorporated into very short and simple movement phrases.

At this level the most important aspect is to totally process the key concepts of the technique where they become so integrated in the student’s physicality that they become 2nd nature from which to build more complex exercises and sequences into the intermediate level.

Limón Based Contemporary ( Beginners & Intermediate level class )

Limón based contemporary

The training is based on the principles of the Humphrey-Technique. Mastering the weight. Fall and recovery being the main idea all movements and stasis can be resumed into. The shift of weight is the beginning of all movements. In Limón we work on letting go as a principle of control, strength and awareness. Salvatore tries to induce the technique by infusing every moment of the class with a dynamic discourse, even in the most imperceptible motion, rhythm being the fundamental of any flow. All of the elements are tools to start a dynamic research of our body’s relation to the surroundings: Movement. From simple heartbeat, to the most refined virtuosic, all is archived through an organic relation to our bodies.

Jazz Dance

jazz dance classes

A flowing style of classical jazz dance using some familiar movement vocabulary as in ballet usually associated with Broadway musicals and rarely has to to do with Jazz music. Jazz dance has its origin in African American Culture starting from the early 20th century where it later branched midway into two directions; 1 ) the vernacular popular styles of jazz such as Charleston, Lindy Hop and Swing dance and 2 ) the more staged theatrical type and Broadway. Here you will be learning the theatrical type of Jazz.

Dynamic Flow and Floor work ( Beginners & Intermediate level )

Dynamic Flow and Floor

Exploring the concept of the flow in the movement, and how to reach this mental state during moving. Using the gravity, body weight and free-fall concept. We will take our bodies on a journey to discover the relation between our body weight and gravity. We are always in relation to Gravity, this relation becomes so clear while moving. We will explore the following actions in relation to gravity 1. Adding Weight 2. Subtracting weight 3. Multiplying weight 4. Dividing weight.

The session will be divided into 4 sections:

1st section: will be a preparation for the body by bringing a specific kind of comprehensive awareness of the body. Then we will start moving with the same awareness.

2nd section: we will be learning very simple phrases trying to apply what we have just explored.

3rd section: We will be crossing the space using small patterns of movements.

4th section: this section will be divided between improvisation and a small choreography to apply what we have learned.

Improvisation ( Instant composition ) ( Open level )

Improvisation

It is about improvisation.

We will be exploring different concepts of improvising dance and creating movements. We will practice how to create our own dance and how to share it with others, how to get inspired by the environment surrounding us and how to affect it, how to be aware of what we feel in the moment and connect it with the movement we are doing and then let this movement affect us and open this chain between feelings and dance. We also will research different kinds of relationships with space and all physical bodies that surround us and how to create our dance from there. So, we will aim for experiencing this state of expressing what we have inside us with dance and how to develop that and share it with others.
